The process begins with the discovery of discarded items underneath someone’s house, including old tiles, bricks, and a couple of unfortunate surprises like a few dead rats. However, amidst these discarded objects, the focus shifts to the old gutter that has caught the eye of the creator, who envisions its potential for transformation.
The first step is to cut the gutter to the desired length, and luckily, it is a perfect fit for the project. However, if needed, one could use tools such as tin snips, angle grinders, or hacksaws to adjust the length. Next, the ends of the gutter are sealed using right and left end caps, which are pop riveted and then sealed with silicon to prevent water leakage.
With the gutter ready, the hydroponic system takes shape. Since hydroponics involve growing plants in water, a water pump will be used to feed water into one end of the gutter. To ensure proper water flow, a slight fall is created in the gutter, leading to a hole at the bottom where water will drop into another gutter. In total, three gutters will be used for this system, each attached to the frame with gutter brackets.
The absence of framework across the middle of the deck calls for a creative solution, and the DIY enthusiast cleverly uses a spare piece of timber to serve as the attachment point for the brackets. Resourcefulness comes to the fore, demonstrating that hoarding can sometimes pay off in such DIY endeavors.
Drainage holes are added to the end of the gutter to allow water to pass through while preventing clogging. A geotextile material is placed over the holes to ensure smooth water flow. The planting process begins, and the creator chooses to grow strawberries and marigolds hydroponically. By shaking the soil off the roots, the plants are placed into the gutter and backfilled with lightweight clay balls, ideal for hydroponic growth.
Now comes the vital element: water. A plastic pot is used as a pond, housing a pump that recirculates water through a copper pipe. The pipe bends over into the top of the gutter, providing a continuous water supply to the plants, fulfilling their specific needs for optimal growth.
The end result is a beautiful and functional hydroponic garden, utilizing items that would have otherwise been discarded. This project showcases how ingenuity and resourcefulness can transform everyday objects into something extraordinary.
