Initially, despite filling her balcony with decorations such as rocks, furniture, trees, and grass, she felt a profound void. It wasn’t until she began utilizing her outdoor space to cultivate an edible garden that she truly found a sense of peace and satisfaction. The smell of fresh soil and the joy of growing her own food helped Jolene connect with nature and fill the gap that once seemed incessant.

The introduction of an edible garden on her balcony wasn’t merely about the food; it evolved into a journey of self-discovery and better health choices. It sparked an interest in the origins of her food and facilitated better decisions about what she consumed.

More significantly, the process of gardening became a metaphor for personal growth and mental wellbeing. Waiting patiently for seeds to sprout, cultivating plants day by day, Jolene discovered a new avenue for alleviating anxiety and developing patience. She drew parallels between the seeds of her vegetable garden and the metaphorical seeds of kindness, mindfulness, acceptance, and love she was nurturing in her own mind. Simultaneously, she uprooted the weeds of indifference, selfishness, gluttony, and anger from her life, just as she did in her garden.

Jolene’s story serves as an invitation for others to introspect about their own ‘gardens’. She encourages her audience to reflect on the types of seeds they are cultivating, both in their physical gardens and mental spaces. Finally, Jolene invites comments from her audience, seeking to hear their stories of coping with urban life’s nature cravings, and hoping they find similar peace and joy in their own gardens, wherever they may be.
